DOWA HOLDINGS CO., LTD. (14-1, Sotokanda 4-chome, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Capital: 36.4 billion yen; President: SEKIGUCHI Akira) and National University Corporation Tohoku University (1-1, Katahira 2-chome, Aoba-ku, Sendai-shi, Miyagi; President: TOMINAGA Teiji; hereafter, "Tohoku University") announced that on September 4, 2024, they held a symposium to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the DOWA HOLDINGS Endowed Chair that was established at the Tohoku University Graduate School of Environmental Studies (official name: Endowed Division of Environmental Resource Cycle Course; hereafter, the "DOWA Endowed Chair").
The DOWA Endowed Chair was established at Tohoku University Graduate School of Environmental Studies in 2004 as one of the first environment-related programs established by a private enterprise at a university. The symposium was held to celebrate the milestone 20th anniversary of the DOWA Endowed Chair, a program focused mainly on research and education in the field of the environment. In the time since the establishment of the DOWA Endowed Chair, the world's environmental awareness and systems related to environmental problems have changed remarkably. Society has begun to move strongly towards the establishment of a decarbonized society and circular economy (a resource-recycling economy). During this symposium, people from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the Ministry of the Environment and universities engaged in leading-edge research were invited to speak mainly about the circular economy of today and the future.

- Developing technologies for achieving advanced resource recycling through initiatives leading to the planning of social policies and technological strategies that are closely linked to the environment
- Developing human resources who will be involved in environmental projects (education, business and industry) in Japan and abroad through social, scientific and technological development related to environmental science
■Activities:
The division engages in technology development and policy recommendations themed mainly on Environmental Process Science, Environmental Policy Implementation Studies, and Environmental Policy and Impact Assessment. It is developing young scientists through initiatives such as the granting of prizes to excellent debate participants and developing the seeds of environmental projects through open recruitment.
